Dog training in Singapore: choosing a trainer
By PetBuddy.sg TeamPublished 3 October 2026

If your dog suddenly starts biting or seems fearful, a vet check is a good first step.
Looking into dog training in Singapore? PetBuddy does not rank trainers, because we have not sat in on their classes. What we can share is what a helpful class looks like for life in an HDB estate, and when AVS asks for an accredited trainer.
Start with what you need
A puppy meeting void decks and lifts for the first time usually does well in a short, kind group class covering name, sit, loose-lead walking and calm lift manners. A dog that bites, freezes on walks or panics at loud noises may need one-to-one sessions with a trainer who will also suggest a vet check in case pain is involved. We would be cautious of any programme that promises a whole new personality in two weeks. Look for one that teaches you skills you can keep using at home.
When AVS asks for an accredited trainer
Most owners never need this, but a few situations do. Project ADORE adopters complete an obedience programme with an AVS-accredited or ADORE trainer. Specified dogs need applicable training, and owners asking AVS to keep more than three pets in a private home are asked for proof that each extra dog was trained by an accredited trainer. If that applies to you, choose someone from the AVS list of accredited trainers so the certificate is accepted.
Signs a trainer may not be the right fit
- Prong collars, choke chains or shock collars as a first tool, especially for a puppy.
- Reluctance to let you watch the sessions.
- Advice to “dominate” your dog, pin them down, or meet fear with more fear.
- Guarantees that a reactive dog will be safe with children after a set number of lessons.
Practise in the places you actually go: the void deck, the lift and the market, not only a training hall. And remember that in NParks parks, dogs stay on a leash outside designated dog runs, however reliable their recall is.
