Looking for a good pet shop in Singapore? PetBuddy does not have a pet-shop directory yet, because we only list businesses we can check properly. In the meantime, here are our tips for choosing where to shop. A handy first step for shops that sell animals is the AVS public registry of licensed pet shops. If you know a shop you love, we would be glad to hear about it.
Buying food and supplies
- Choose food that suits your pet, ideally with your vet’s input. A “premium” bag is not the same as a prescription diet, so it is best not to swap a prescription diet for one on sale.
- Check expiry dates on treats, and look for xylitol on peanut butter or chew labels. That sweetener is dangerous for dogs.
- For flea and tick products, a shop that asks your pet’s species and weight is a good sign. Some dog spot-ons are toxic to cats.
- Make sure crates, harnesses and carriers fit your pet, including room for a flat-faced dog to pant. Test the latch in the shop.
Buying an animal
Buying a pet is a bigger decision than buying food. A good shop will be happy to show you the vaccination record and microchip details and to answer your questions. If you live in an HDB flat, ask for the breed in writing before you commit, because the approved-breed list is specific and “teacup” is not a breed. AVS licenses pet shops, and its registry lets you confirm a shop’s licence.
If you are open to adoption, our adoption guide is worth a read first. Shelters and welfare groups have lovely animals waiting for homes. They can also tell you whether a particular pet would suit an HDB flat, and some local dogs qualify for Project ADORE.
Online shops and marketplaces
For live animals, we would gently suggest avoiding marketplace listings where you cannot meet the animal or see the paperwork. Please do not transfer money for a pet you have not seen. For food, buy from a seller who will take back a damaged or expired bag. For prescription diets, your vet is the best source.
