Pet insurance in Singapore: what to compare

In an emergency, call the hospital first and sort out the claim afterwards.
Comparing pet insurance in Singapore? Several insurers offer pet medical plans, and they differ more than the headline price suggests. PetBuddy does not rank or recommend insurers. Here is a friendly checklist to help you read the policy wording and pick what suits you.
What a plan usually covers
Most plans pay back part of your vet bills after an accident or a new illness, up to an annual limit, once you have paid an excess. Some pay the clinic directly, and others reimburse you later. Routine vaccinations, food, grooming and breeding are often not covered. Dental care is a common exclusion unless you add a rider. Pre-existing conditions, meaning anything your pet had before cover started or during a waiting period, are a common reason claims are declined.
Questions to check in the wording
- Waiting periods for illness, accidents, and specific cover such as ligament or dental claims.
- Whether hereditary and congenital conditions are excluded. This matters for flat-faced breeds and some purebreds.
- The annual limit, any per-condition limit, and the excess.
- Whether 24-hour and specialist hospitals are covered, and whether treatment must be in Singapore.
- Age limits for new policies and for renewals, so you can keep cover into your pet’s senior years.
- How to claim: the invoices and medical notes needed, and how long reimbursement takes.
Comparison sites are a helpful start, but your pet’s own history matters more than a score out of ten. Your vet can tell you which insurers they work with directly. Choosing the policy is still your call.
What insurance is not
Insurance should never delay emergency care. If your pet is in danger, get treatment first, keep the invoice, and claim later. A pet medical plan is also separate from your AVS licence. It is not the same as the third-party liability insurance (at least $100,000) and banker’s guarantee that AVS requires for Specified dogs. If the premiums and exclusions do not add up for you, a dedicated savings pot is a perfectly good alternative. What matters is being able to say yes to treatment when it counts.
